Over the years, as girl jonah, we have been developing our own movement aesthetic, exploring the detail and the difference in our particular movements; the fascinations and the possibilities. Our own bodies sharing the choreography raises questions about individual movement languages and what is revealed between us as we move together. In this way we use our work to raise the visibility of disabled artists without necessarily being named as an 'integrated' dance project.
These ideas are also the basis for our approach to workshop facilitation and teaching which is open to disabled and non-disabled participants and also aims to be inclusive and welcoming to different kinds of relevant training and backgrounds.
Tailor-made workshops for specific contexts can offer a taste of some of the methods and approaches that girl jonah work with together in the studio.
Sessions might begin on the floor, or at rest, to bring attention and interest to the particular body we are inhabiting, a focus on our relationship to gravity with perhaps some introductory body-voice work. We will use simple improvisation scores to include dance and text to develop individual inclinations and collaborative structures. An opportunity to reflect creatively through movement research with an emphasis on process and experimentation.
We do also work through teaching sections of our own existing choreography in order to expand on thinking about different responses, strategies and interpretations in dance repertory.
Introductory sessions available as well as Professional Development for teaching, performance-making and choreography.
